How to Hang a Stretched Canvas in 5 Easy Steps

How To Hang A Canvas In 5 Easy Steps

Here you’ll learn how to hang a stretched canvas without putting it into a frame. Stand-alone canvas decor is a great modern style you can easily add to your home.

I remember the first time I had to hang a stretched canvas. I was submitting artwork into a local visual arts exhibition and all pieces need to be hung properly. You could pay an extra small fee to have someone there put the hanging mechanism on the back for you and that’s what I did. I asked if I could watch while he did it so that I could learn. Thankfully he said I could so I was able to learn firsthand how to properly hang a painting.

Step 1: Measurements

Measure a quarter to a third of the way down from the top of your canvas.

In the example in the video, the painting is 24 inches in height by 36 inches in length, therefore I measured down 8 inches from the top as 8 inches is a third of 24.

Make sure to mark both sides at the third point with a pencil.

Step 2: Hanging Mechanism – D-Ring Hangers

Get out your hanging mechanism and line up the bottom of the D-ring with the markings on each side of the canvas you made in step 1.

Once it is lined up, make a pencil mark in the hole or holes below where the screws will go.

*Some D-ring hangers will have one screw in each and some will have two. I recommend two if you are using a heavier canvas, otherwise, one will be just fine.

Step 3: Put in the Screws

Now you put in the screws to secure the D-ring to the hanger.

The reason for marking where they go is so that you can start the hole with a small drill if you have one or start it with the screws before then placing the D-ring below it.

Step 4: Attaching the Wire

Once the screws are in place, measure the wire from one D-ring, to the top middle of the canvas, and then back down to the other D-ring.

Leave a little extra wire on both sides so as to have enough to tighten it properly on each side.

Step 5: Tighten the Wire

Using pliers, pinch and twist the wire where the overlap meets it close to the d-rings on each side.

I usually give it a couple twists with the pliers to make sure it is tight and then just wrap the rest of the extra wire back along itself so there are no loose ends.

Loose ends could puncture the canvas.

You are ready to hang!

Make sure the nail, or ring you have on the wall is strong enough to hold your painting. Your painting should now hang almost, if not, flush with the wall.
