New Mixed Media Artwork – Pyrography & Acrylic Paint

I am super excited to officially introduce you to a new type of art that I have been doing! If you have been following me in the last two months, you will have seen I have been trying a new style of mixed media art.

This new style of art combines pyrography (wood burning) and acrylic paint to create a unique one of a kind piece of art. Let’s take a look at the first piece I did and then I’ll talk a bit about my process.

Chief Mountain Mixed Media Art by the Canadian artist Brian Sloan

This one is called “Chief Mountain”. It is done on a piece of pine wood that measures 7.25 inches high and about 11 inches wide.

As you can see, it is very geometrical. Those black lines you see surrounding the shapes are actually lines that are burned into the wood using a wood-burning iron.

Here is the full process I use to create this piece (there will also be a video down below but I know some people like to read it as well).

  1. I cut the wood to the size I want
  2. Sand it on both faces and sides
  3. With pencil, draw lines on the wood where I will burn
  4. Burn the lines into the wood
  5. Paint in the spaces with acrylic paint
  6. Use a blow torch to burn the sides
  7. Spray the whole piece with a gloss varnish to seal it (usually three coats)

Here is the second one that I did. This one is of Lake Moraine in Banff, Alberta.

I recorded the whole process of this one so you can see exactly how it is done. Here is the video:

I have done similar time-lapse videos for many of the other pieces. If you are interested in watching them, head on over to my YouTube Channel.

These pieces have been super fun to do. The time of completion for them ranges from about 7 hours to 12 hours (minus the drying time). It depends on how many lines there are to burn and how many different colors there are in the piece.

I have done eleven different paintings in this style so far. The gallery below will show them all.

All of these paintings are made to order. This means even if the originals have sold, (which almost all of them have) I can recreate them for you. The processing time usually takes 1-2 weeks from the date of ordering.

You can also see all of the paintings in my gallery.

So far I have been creating pieces that are roughly 7.25×11 inches. However, if you would like a piece done on a larger piece of wood, I can do that! At this moment I can create pieces up to 24×36 inches. Obviously prices will vary depending on the size so just contact me and we can work out the details.
